A car fire on Interstate 91 that ignited the grass caused the closure of both lanes

A car fire on Interstate 91 that ignited the grass caused the closure of both lanes while firefighters addressed the emergency.

A Vermont State Police report notes that Joseph Authier of R.I., was driving a 2017 Kia Sorrento in the southbound lane when the fire erupted. Authier’s vehicle was towing a boat at the time. The boat was not damaged as the trailer had been detached from the burning car and pulled clear.

An off-duty firefighter from Barnet who was passing by stopped and stomped out small fires that were starting in the grass. When St. Johnsbury Firefighters arrived they extinguished the vehicle fire and watered down the grass to prevent any flare-ups.

There were no injuries.
