A Newport man told police he was on his cell phone prior to crashing his car into a tree off Interstate 91 in Derby on Saturday. John Giroux, 32, was not hurt when he crashed while driving. The car was totaled but Giroux was wearing a seat belt. Another trooper, who was stopped with another motorist on the side of I91, saw Giroux’s Accord strike a U-turn sign and crash into trees in the median. The car was towed from the scene and police ticketed Giroux for using his cell phone while driving.
