The Vermont Warden Service, Newport Fire Department and Newport Police Department rescued two minors who went through the ice on Lake Memphremagog, near Horseneck Island, on Friday, Feb. 18. Rescuers successfully deployed the Fire Department’s side-by-side to retrieve the kids and return them to shore. They were treated on scene, evaluated for hypothermia and transported to North Country Hospital in Newport. They were released later that day. Authorities from Vermont Fish & Wildlife say the minors were operating their ATV west on the ice of Lake Memphremagog. They encountered a pressure crack in the ice and broke through, fully submerging their ATV in approximately five to six feet of standing water on top of the ice. The pair was able to call for help while standing on top of the four-wheeler. The ATV was later removed from the ice.
