Vermont’s Congressional Delegation held a press conference Monday afternoon to highlight the many Vermont projects included in the federal appropriations bills that were recently signed into law and indicate that more may be included in the final package of bills working its way through Congress. The Northeast Kingdom is slated to receive CDS funding for several projects. Bernie Sanders announced $42.5 million in funding for 36 projects, including affordable housing, child care, infrastructure, clean energy and water, and rural development. There is also $1,500,000 for Rural Edge to advance the housing project at the former Sacred Heart school and convent in Newport that will create an additional 24 housing units in Newport. Other projects funded through Sanders’ requests include: $75,000 for Northeast Kingdom Community Action to develop a childcare center in Canaan, and $125,000 for Canaan Naturally Connected to establish a community gathering place at the Episcopal church building which requires renovations and accessibility improvements.
