Homeless Shelter Expansion Planned At Former St. Johnsbury Moose Lodge
ST. JOHNSBURY — The homeless shelter on Moose River Drive is expanding into the former Moose Lodge less than half a mile east on Portland Street.
Rural Edge and Northeast Kingdom Community Action (NEKCA), whose collaboration brought the 20-person capacity shelter on Moose River Drive online in January 2024, are continuing the partnership with the expansion, which will double capacity.
Officials initially looked at expanding on the current Rural Edge-owned property at 72 Moose River Dr., but it was deemed too costly and problematic to keep the shelter open while doing construction work there.
Purchasing the building at 2388 Portland St., which served as a Moose Lodge for 45 years before the local chapter was closed last summer, gives shelter officials a large building (over 8,500 square feet) that can be transformed into a shelter while the current space continues operations. Rural Edge Director Patrick Shattuck said the goal is to have the new space ready for occupancy in the winter of 2027-2028.
