Dog Mountain Draws Hundreds For Fall Celebration
ST. JOHNSBURY — The dream of a mountainside sanctuary filled with trails and wildflowers, surrounded by peak Northeast Kingdom foliage and dogs of all breeds romping with their owners — many off leash — is alive and well at Dog Mountain.
The vision of the late Stephen and Gwen Huneck continues today through Friends of Dog Mountain and the supporters and volunteers who help sustain its mission.
On Saturday, hundreds of visitors and their four-legged companions descended on Dog Mountain for one of the nonprofit organization’s popular Dog Party days. People came from numerous states, some arriving in RVs, and parking became tight at times as a steady stream of vehicles arrived for the event, which ran from noon to 5 p.m.
There were contests, including a ball toss and pie-eating event, as well as photo opportunities featuring everything from fancy glasses and feather boas to Halloween costumes. Vendors offered an assortment of pet-themed goods, while food booths and live music added to the festivities.
The Dog Mountain gallery was also doing brisk business as visitors picked out T-shirts, hoodies, artwork and other merchandise while supporting the organization through purchases, donations and event raffles
