State Board Approves I91 Dedication To Fallen Border Patrol Agent
The Vermont Transportation Board unanimously voted last week to dedicate a portion of Interstate 91 in Orleans County to a border patrol agent struck down in the line of duty.
North and south lanes between exits 26 and 28 are now the “David Chris Maland (MAY-LAND) Memorial Highway.”
U.S. Border Patrol Agent David “Chris” Maland was shot during a traffic stop while in the performance of his official duties on Interstate 91 in Coventry on Jan. 20, 2025.
The dedicated portion of the interstate includes the area where Teresa Youngblut, of Seattle, Wash., allegedly shot him. He was pronounced dead at North Country Hospital in Newport about 30 minutes after the shooting.
“Agent Maland lost his life in the line of duty seeking to protect his country and community and his sacrifice warrants remembrance,” notes the board decision endorsed by the five-member board.
Nearly a year ago, American Legion Post No. 21 in Newport petitioned the board to honor Maland with the I-91 naming dedication. At the time, the request covered the entire Orleans County portion of the interstate. That request was amended in March of this year to the shorter 11-mile section ultimately approved.
