St. Johnsbury Man Held On $20,000 Bail For Alleged Felony Assault

A St. Johnsbury man who works as a corrections officer at the Northeast Correctional Complex in St. Johnsbury is being held in jail on $20,000 bail after being arrested on Saturday for alleged felony assault.

Mathew Bradley, 48, is accused of assaulting Levi Holmstead, 18, on Bradley’s property on Harvey Street. St. Johnsbury Police Sgt. Lester Cleary said Holmstead had gone to Bradley’s residence as part of Holmstead’s work with Fidium Fiber.

Also accused in the assault is a 15-year-old child, reported Officer Carson Smires.

The officer reported that a few minutes after 7 p.m. police were dispatched to a report of an assault at the Harvey Street location. The police report notes that their investigation led to charges of aggravated assault and disorderly conduct against Bradley. The alleged physical assault is a felony, said Sgt. Cleary, because Bradley is accused of choking Holmstead.

The teen, who police did not identify, is facing charges of simple assault and violation of court orders after being found and arrested about 90 minutes after the initial police dispatch. The teen’s Caledonia Family Court hearing is set for Wednesday.

Bradley was lodged in jail on $20,000 bail. Instead of being held in the correctional facility where he works, he is jailed at Northern State Correctional Facility in Newport. Because the court was closed for the holiday on Monday, Bradley is scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday in Caledonia Superior Court.
