St. Johnsbury School Student Selected As Kid Governor Finalist

ST. JOHNSBURY — What began as a routine school assembly turned into an unforgettable surprise Wednesday morning for St. Johnsbury School fifth grader Emerson Longley, who learned she was selected as one of seven statewide finalists in Vermont’s Kid Governor election.

The surprise announcement came during a gathering of the school’s fifth-grade class when Vermont Secretary of State Sarah Copeland Hanzas revealed that Longley had advanced from among student nominees across Vermont to become one of seven candidates whose names will appear on the statewide ballot next month.

Longley earned the opportunity after winning St. Johnsbury School’s primary election earlier this month, emerging from a field of 21 St. Johnsbury fifth-grade candidates. School officials said the local campaign drew strong student participation, with students creating platforms, delivering speeches and campaigning among classmates before casting ballots.

“I am so excited to find out the top seven,” said Longley as she delivered a speech thanking her classmates for helping her prepare her campaign video. “Thank you for helping me bring this video to life. We are always stronger together.”

Moments later, 5th-grade teacher Pam Fallon introduced Copeland Hanzas, and Longley learned she was one of the top seven. The announcement caught Longley and many of her classmates off guard.
