Newport Police were called to a Main Street business for a report of an individual
On Tuesday, Sept. 26th, Newport Police were called to a Main Street business for a report of an individual who took items from the store without paying. A review of the store’s video surveillance led to the identification of Thomas Cloney, 39, of Newport as a suspect. At about 11:30 a.m., officers located Cloney in the area of Prouty Campground, but he reportedly fled on foot when approached. When he was located again a short time later, Cloney allegedly pulled out a knife and held it by his side. An officer drew his weapon and ordered Cloney to drop the weapon. He did so and was taken into custody. Cloney is well known to Newport Police, having faced retail theft charges before. Cloney was arraigned in Orleans District Court on charges of retail theft, 2 counts of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. He was released on personal recognizance, with the conditions he not return to the store nor possess dangerous weapons.
