The American Red Cross was ready to shelter people displaced
The American Red Cross was ready to shelter people displaced by the flood at the St. Johnsbury School on Thursday, but only one person took advantage of the accommodations. The school was meant to serve people from St. Johnsbury and surrounding towns who couldn’t be home due to their level of flood victimization. The one person who spent the night there had been living in a tent near the Passumpsic River in Lyndon. Officials at the Red Cross determined that relocating the shelter to the Lyndonville Public Safety building may get them closer to the greatest need. In fact, some people did stay at the fire department on Thursday. The fire station is an evacuation center for Lyndon, but now the Red Cross will provide shelter operations there. It opened at 3 p.m. on Friday.
