The Burke Mountain Hillclimb, an annual event in which cars race up the toll road to the summit of Burke Mountain, ended Sunday with a single-vehicle crash into a tree. The vehicle, with two occupants, went off the road and into a tree at about 12:20 p.m. The tree reportedly fell on the vehicle and the two occupants were trapped inside. East Burke Fire Department and Lyndon Fire Department were dispatched to the scene along with two ambulances from Lyndon Rescue. The incident occurred about 1/4 mile up from the Mountain Road. The event began Saturday, June 22, and was to conclude Sunday. Details on the identities and conditions of the vehicle occupants were not available.
