Mexican man died shortly after crossing into Vermont from Canada

State Police said a Mexican man died shortly after crossing into Vermont from Canada on Monday at 1 a.m.  Jose Cervantes, 45, of Mexico collapsed after encountering U.S. Border Patrol agents on Goodall Road in Holland. The death is not considered suspicious by police. An autopsy on Tuesday withheld a cause and manner of death pending further testing, including toxicology. Police reported no signs of trauma. According to the state police investigation, Border Patrol reportedly observed three people crossing illegally into the U.S. at approximately 10:30 p.m. Sunday evening. Cervantes reportedly collapsed when Boarder Patrol approached the men. The others ran back to Canada police said. Agents provided first aid, including CPR and Cervantes was transported by ambulance to North Country Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Vermont State Police was notified of the incident at 1 a.m. Monday and responded to the hospital to conduct a death investigation. The State Police investigation into this matter remains active and ongoing, and no further information is available.
