Senator Welch Denounces Chaotic Tariffs and Supports Ukraine Peace
Vermont Senator Peter Welch Thursday spoke out against the Trump administration’s chaotic tariffs and also reaffirmed Democrats’ support for a lasting peace in Ukraine. In a speech on the Senate floor, Welch said he believes the president’s economic policies will send the country into a recession. It comes on the same day that the stock market took another nosedive, with the S&P 500 now down over 10 percent from a month ago. “It’s really, really stupid. This is going to hurt Vermont. I call on all of us to speak out on these tariffs that are going to hurt us,” Welch said. Welch also urged caution as U.S. negotiators begin discussions in Moscow over a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine. While agreeing with the outlines of the deal, Welch noted that any truce should pave the way to lasting peace. Along with a group of bipartisan lawmakers, he highlighted the importance of America’s commitment to peace and security in Europe.
