Snowmobile Racing Legend Inducted Into Hall Of Fame

From the get-go, Bruce Hawes led the pack.

When local snowmobiling racing was born in the Great North Woods of New Hampshire, he was right there at the starting line, pushing his machines to the max, keeping a cool head in the heat of a race, giving it his all, and coming away with wins that made him a standout across New England.

On Saturday at Crane’s Snowmobile Museum, Hawes, 89, of Colebrook, was inducted into the Eastern Snowmobile Racing Hall of Fame during ESRHF’s 10th annual induction ceremony.

“Bruce ‘Flying Mailman’ Hawes started racing Ski-Doo in 1965 for Bunnell Sales and Service in Colebrook and some independent race teams, Moto-Ski and Rockwell,” said Jonathan Hawes, Hawes’ son, who read the ESRHF biography of his father.

During his racing career, Bruce Hawes went up against the best of them in Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire, nabbing a third-place finish in Class C at the Balsams Cup and wins at the famed Kilkenny Cup in Lancaster, a town historically known as “snowmobile city.”

His first USSA race was at the Lancaster Fairgrounds, where he took part in the 340 modified cross country event. From that, he gained valuable experience that he applied throughout his racing career.

The Lake Region Boys Soccer program will take on Spaulding this afternoon at 4:30pm while the undefeated North Country boy’s soccer program hosts Thetford Academy. Kick off at 4:30pm.
