A man from Newport was killed when the vehicle he was driving crashed

A man from Newport was killed when the vehicle he was driving crashed on Interstate 91 in Barton Friday night. Derick Ward, 39, was driving a 2017 Ford Superduty utility truck in the northbound lane of the interstate when the vehicle left the road in the area of milemarker 154 and crashed into a wooded area of the median, according to a report by state police Sgt. Joshua Mikkola. Ward was pronounced dead at the scene. The sergeant reported that it was raining at the time and the roadway was wet. Ward was wearing a seat belt, noted Sgt. Mikkola. A member of the Vermont State Police Crash Reconstruction Team, along with members of Orleans Fire Department, Orleans Ambulance Service, Orleans County Sheriff’s Department and B&B Towing assisted at the scene.
