Sheila Canto, 57, of Coventry on the charges of grand larceny
Newport Police Chief Travis Bingham reported January 11 the arrest of Sheila Canto, 57, of Coventry on the charges of grand larceny and operating without owner consent. At about 6:15 a.m., January 11, Newport Police responded to 74 Middle St. for a report of a stolen vehicle. Upon arrival, officers spoke with a resident who reported their car, a white Toyota Yaris, was stolen while it was warming up outside. At 12:18 p.m., an Orleans County sheriff’s deputy located the white Toyota Yaris traveling on Lower Village Road in Lowell. The vehicle’s operator was determined to be Canto, She was arrested without incident and transferred to the Newport Police station for booking. A preliminary investigation determined that Canto approached the victim looking for a ride, and when the victim declined and then went back inside their home, Canto took the vehicle. She was arraigned on January 11 in Orleans Superior Court and released under the condition she had no contact with the victim.
