A former Newport man remains in critical condition
A former Newport man remains in critical condition, after he was shot several times by an unknown assailant in Colchester. Dontay Canada, 41, now of Burlington, received multiple gunshot wounds, including to an arm and a leg, outside a residence at the Old Fort Ethan Allen off Vermont 15 shortly after 4 p.m. on Sunday. EMS treated Canada for life-threatening injuries inside a residence where he was moved after the shooting. No arrests have been made. Canada is well known to Vermont law enforcement. Newport City Police said they arrested Canada in April 2020, charged with felony counts of assault and robbery with injury, unlawful restraint and aggravated assault. He also was charged with a misdemeanor count of false information to police, and prosecutors asked that he be considered a habitual offender, which could bring a life sentence. Court records at the time showed Canada had six prior felony convictions.
