A man who sued the Caledonian-Record over coverage of his criminal court proceedings did not go to trial

A man who sued the Caledonian-Record over coverage of his criminal court proceedings did not go to trial in his underying case. Instead, the case was resolved by a plea agreement just moments before the jury was prepared to be selected. James Gibbons, 54, pleaded no contest to 2nd degree aggravated domestic assault and admitted to a violation of probation. He was then sentenced to 3 years and 60 days to serve in prison. The sentence was structured to enable Gibbons to complete the risk reduction program while incarcerated. He will also have to pay $147 in court surcharges. When released, it is expected he will be extradited to Clinton County, Indiana, where he faces a domestic assault charge. At the end of his lawsuit against The Caledonian-Record, the Vermont Supreme Court agreed with Superior Court Judge Daniel Richardson and ordered Gibbons to pay the Caledonian-Record thousands of dollars in legal fees.
