A Vermont woman loses over $100,000 in a romance scam

A Vermont woman loses over $100,000 in a romance scam. U.S. attorneys for Vermont say 58-year-old Cedric Wormley of Birmingham, Alabama is being charged with 10 counts of wire fraud. According to court records, Wormley met the victim on a dating website back in the summer of 2022 and the two began what she believed was a genuine romantic relationship. But Wormley was lying about his identity pretending to be a New England man with a job living in Maine. Wormely allegedly told the victim that he was having a hard time accessing his pension and needed her to help pay for a large construction job he had taken on in Mississippi. Wormely promised to repay her, and she believed him and transferred over more than $100,000. If convicted, Wormely faces up to twenty years’ incarceration and a fine of up to $250,000.
