Police say two Central Vermont stores were targeted

Police say two Central Vermont stores were targeted in a credit card scam. Vermont state police say three men bought $200 worth of cigarettes in a series of small purchases last week at the Bethel Central Market. Investigators say the men claimed tap-to-pay didn’t work on their phones, so they manually entered the credit card number. Those purchases were later canceled by the credit card company when the real card owner disputed the charges, leaving the store out the money. Police say the same thing happened at the store owner’s Rochester location, the Skip Mart, the day before. The men involved in the scam have been driving a U-Haul van and they were also seen in the St. Albans area last week. Police want to hear from any businesses that believe they have been victims of this scam. Contact the barracks in Royalton.
