State regulators are asking Vermont lawmakers to slow down on new racetrack rules
State regulators are asking Vermont lawmakers to slow down on new racetrack rules. Racetrack inspections were revved up in 2019 after two spectators were injured in a crash at Thunder Road. A new report found state regulation is redundant because of existing insurance policies. Insurance companies don’t want to cover accidents and racetracks are motivated to have proper insurance if an accident would happen.Vermont is one of five states that regulate and inspect racetracks. “This is an important piece of Vermont’s history, we have a good number of racetracks here than other states. And when we’re viewing nationwide around what was happening in racetrack regulation, Vermont was an anomaly,” said Lauren Hibbert of the Vt. Office of Professional Regulation. Vermont Gov. Phil Scott, who is also a stock car racer, says he supports eliminating state racetrack regulations.
