Sullivan Signals Intent To Step Down As Burke Town Administrator At Year’s End
BURKE — Town Administrator Jim Sullivan has told the Select Board it is time to begin planning for his eventual departure, recommending the town hire an assistant who could learn the job before taking over.
“It’s probably time to be looking at a succession plan for me,” Sullivan said at Monday’s meeting.
Sullivan, who has served as town administrator since May 2022, said he still enjoys the work but is beginning to think about the next phase of his life.
Sullivan said he expects to continue working full time through the end of the year while the town searches for a successor. He would then gradually step away as the new administrator assumes responsibility.
“I don’t plan on walking out the door,” he said. “I’m glad to stay working full time right up through the end of the year while we try and find our new town administrator, and then at the appropriate time, I can just sort of break away, and that person can take over.”
Sullivan recommended bringing in an assistant to shadow him during a transition period, allowing the new hire to become familiar with the job. The length of the overlap would depend in part on the candidate’s experience, he said.
