The Vermont Supreme Court says the man accused of causing a crash that killed a Rutland Police officer
The Vermont Supreme Court says the man accused of causing a crash that killed a Rutland Police officer should remain behind bars until his trial. Police say Tate Rheaume was fleeing from officers in July 2023 when he crossed the center line and collided head-on with Officer Jessica Ebbighausen’s cruiser, killing her. He is awaiting trial for aggravated murder, which carries a mandatory life sentence. Rheaume appealed to the high court that he should be let out on bail. His attorney told the justices that Rheaume had no prior record and followed conditions when he was first released. The court affirmed the lower court’s findings, saying, “the proposed conditions of release did not sufficiently mitigate the risk of flight and the danger he posed to the public.” A trial date has yet to be announced.
