Wheelock Select Board Weighs Evening Town Meeting, Fiscal-Year Budget
The Wheelock Select Board is considering moving the annual Town Meeting to the evening to make it easier for working residents to attend. Members also discussed switching the town’s budget year from the calendar year to a July-to-June fiscal year.
The board discussed both proposals at its Oct. 13 meeting but took no action on either.
Evening Town Meeting
Board members said an evening meeting could make Town Meeting more accessible to residents who work during the day.
Board member Mike Richardson said he favored an evening meeting because it would let people who work during the day attend without infringing on their weekends. He noted most employers no longer close and give staff the day off to attend town meeting.
“I’m more inclined to the evening thing and just get it done because some people have more time after work [on] weekdays, and that leaves them their weekend to do stuff,” he said.
The board also recalled an earlier community meeting where non-retired residents expressed support for moving Town Meeting to the evening.
Some favored keeping the meeting on the traditional Town Meeting Day, the first Tuesday in March, but starting it later. They said residents are accustomed to the date because it appears in newspapers and on calendars.
