An Eden man is being held without bail

An Eden man is being held without bail after being taken into custody by Newport Police at 3 a.m. July 7 in Newport City. Russell Dickens, 56, is being charged with violation of conditions of release, unlawful trespass, second degree aggravated domestic assault and resisting arrest after Newport police reported that Dickens violated court orders when he sought to make contact with a former partner at a residence on Indian Point Street in Newport City.

Newport police responded to that location at about 3 a.m. on July 7 following reports than a man was trespassing, harassing a female homeowner, and refusing to leave. An investigation determined that the man, identified as Dickens, was subject to several court orders relating to alcohol, including conditions that he not contact the female homeowner. Upon arrival, officers discovered that Dickens had barricaded himself in the bathroom, said he had an assault rifle, and threatened to shoot the officers if they attempted entry. He was taken into custody without incident, and a search of the property did not uncover any firearms.
