Vermont State Police arreseted Scott Mason early Sunday morning after an almost 34 hour manhunt. Mason is wanted for the shooting of St. Johnsbury Police Captain Jason Gray on Friday afternoon. Police located Mason, 38, of St. Johnsbury inside a house at 251 Portland Street which is the building next door to his apartment. Mason was taken to the St. Johnsbury State Police Barracks and charged with attempted second-degree murder and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer resulting in serious bodily injury. He faces several unrelated charges. Mason is accused of shooting Police Capt. Jason Gray on Friday afternoon inside an apartment building at 261 Portland St. The captain had responded to a domestic violence report and was reportedly shot by Mason with a shotgun. The captain’s protective vest shielded vital organs from the spray of pellets but several struck him around the vest, including his neck and arms. State Police quickly named Scott Mason, 38, of St. Johnsbury their suspect and said he was armed and dangerous. Mason is described as 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighing around 220 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes. A massive state and local police presence, including a SWAT team, were staged for hours outside Mason’s apartment at 261 Portland Street. Gray, a veteran police officer, was shot at least once. He was airlifted to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and State police said he was in stable but serious condition. Mason’s criminal record in Vermont shows a prior conviction of Domestic Assault and six prior felony convictions for aggravated assault, narcotic sale, accessory before the fact, and two counts of burglary. Mason was charged as a repeat offender in the case and is facing a possible life sentence.
