Northeast Kingdom Waste District Faces Deficit As Plastic Market Collapse

The Northeast Kingdom Waste Management District is running a year-to-date deficit of more than $30,000 as low commodity prices and a “non-existent” plastics market weigh on its finances.

District staff reported the deficit at an Aug. 18 Board of Supervisors meeting, but the board could not take official action because too few supervisors were present to form a quorum.

The district lost just over $16,000 in July, largely because the month included three payroll periods. It also has not yet seen the full effect of a $2-per-ton increase in its trash surcharge that took effect July 1.

Haulers have 30 days after the end of each month to remit the surcharge, meaning July revenue will not be fully reflected until the end of August.

The North Country JV Football Team laid the lumber on last night beating an outmatched U-32 team 54-6. In a total team effort the Falcons boys put on an absolute show in front of an electric crowd on Tuesday night. The JV boys will head to Spaulding high school next Wednesday night for their next game.
