Community Members Spearhead Raffle For Family Managing Cancer Treatments

A vintage VW bus is being raffled off to help a Bethlehem couple managing cancer and the expenses and emotional toll it has brought.

A portion of the proceeds will also go to two local nonprofits assisting in the fundraiser.

In 2015, Leah Sperbeck, a registered nurse, was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Since then, Sperbeck and her husband, Ed Shanshala, the CEO of Ammonoosuc Community Health Services, have regularly traveled out of the country for treatments unavailable in the United States.

All the while, Shanshala has managed the logistics and expenses while keeping focus on his job leading ACHS, said Tim Egan, moderator for the town Sugar Hill and for Profile School, a former state representative, and a friend of Ed’s and Leah’s.

In the beginning, community members came together to support Sperbeck’s needs and are doing the same as she and her husband enter the second decade of an oncology journey, he said.

“A bunch of us have come together because Ed has done so much for the community and we wanted to help,” said Egan.
