Driver Arrested in Brownington Hit and Run That Injured Derby Pedestrian

Vermont State Police found and arrested a motorist they believe struck a pedestrian on Rt. 5A in Brownington on Saturday. Derrick Farrand, 44, is accused of hitting and seriously injuring Ricky Laprade, 64, of Derby, while Farrand was driving a 2017 Subaru WRX.  Trooper Anthony Rice notes that it was raining and the road was wet on Saturday night when Farrand’s vehicle struck Laprade. Authorities said they received multiple complaints just after 9 p.m. on Saturday of a vehicle speeding and failing to maintain its lane. About 10 minutes later, a deputy from the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department located the vehicle parked in the northbound lane of Route 5A and discovered a man, later identified as Laprade, lying in the southbound lane.  For unknown reasons, Laprade had parked his car in the northbound lane, exited the vehicle and entered the southbound lane, where he was struck by another vehicle believed to have been traveling southbound. That vehicle left the scene.  Trooper Rice reported that police followed leads they received following the crash that led them to the vehicle parked on Pepin Road property the next day. Also on the property was Farrand. He was taken into custody and later jailed in Northern State Correctional Facility on $5,000 bail. Laprade was taken to North Country Hospital in Newport with serious injuries. Farrand is charged with leaving the scene of a crash with serious injury resulting. He is scheduled for arraignment on Monday afternoon in Orleans Superior Court.
