Inmate Death Under Investigation at Newport Correctional Facility
Vermont State Police, are investigating the death of a man in custody at Northern State Correctional Facility in Newport. Fifty-four-year-old James Ingerson was found unresponsive in his cell Saturday morning. According to authorities, Ingerson had been feeling unwell and was receiving medical care prior to his death. His cellmate alerted a corrections officer when he found Ingerson unresponsive just before 10 a.m. Despite life-saving efforts by facility staff and EMTs, Ingerson was pronounced dead at 9:54 a.m. by Newport Emergency Medical Services. State Police say the death does not appear suspicious at this time. An autopsy will be conducted by the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington to determine the exact cause of death. Ingerson was serving a sentence for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of cocaine. He was also facing a federal charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
