Milton Officer Shot Responding to Fire Suspect Barricaded in Burning Home
Authorities say a police officer was shot while responding to a fire in Milton on Wednesday. First responders were called to 78 Main St. at around 7 p.m. for a structure fire. When they arrived, a suspect opened fire on them, hitting Milton Patrol Sgt. Paul Locke. The suspect barricaded themself inside the burning home. Police say Locke had injuries that were not life-threatening and he was taken to the UVM Medical Center. They say he is now back home and doing well. The scene was active for about four hours after the gunfire. The tactical services unit and crisis negotiation team were on site. The scene has since been resolved and Main Street has reopened. No one was taken into custody and police say there is no ongoing threat to the public. We don’t know the identity or condition of the suspected shooter. Police say their name will be released once they alert relatives. No word yet as to how the fire started.
