Newport Police Warn Residents About ATM Jackpotting Scam Surge
Newport Police Chief Travis Bingham says theres been a rise in ATM scams. Cybercriminals are targeting stand-alone ATMs in pharmacies, big box stores, and drive-through locations with a tactic known as “jackpotting.” Scammers install malicious software or hardware to force ATMs to dispense large amounts of cash on demand. The Newport Police Department urges residents to stay vigilant and follow these safety tips from the American Bankers Association: Check ATMs for tampering before use. Be aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious activity. If an ATM dispenses more cash than requested, it may have been compromised. Always cover the keypad when entering your PIN and take your card and receipt. If you notice anything suspicious near an ATM, report it to local authorities immediately.
