Police Capt. Jason Gray came home

Still recovering from wounds suffered in a shotgun blast, Police Capt. Jason Gray came home Wednesday evening. His return was a hero’s welcome as bumper-to-bumper police vehicles escorted Gray to his home in the village past a large gathering of supporters on Main Street. The chief said police agencies throughout the state and New Hampshire got about 90 minutes notice, and many of them responded to the opportunity to escort Gray home. Less than a week ago, Gray responded to a report of domestic violence on Portland Street and was shot with a .410 gauge shotgun, reportedly by the man being accused of the domestic violence, Scott Mason. Gray was wearing a protective vest, but pellets from the bird shot struck him in multiple places, including the neck and throat; the blow also collapsed a lung. Gray’s recovery advanced enough to be discharged to his home only five days after being shot. Despite the pouring rain, well-wishers lined Main Street in front of the Public Safety Building. Community members, police officers and firefighters stood outside and cheered as Gray and his caravan of about 30 police vehicles rolled by. Gray arrived home with members of his family and spoke briefly to well-wishers before going inside. Bearing evidence of pellet strikes, including a blackened right eye, he sat at his kitchen table and said the outpouring of support was appreciated.
