U.S. Attorney Nikolas Kerest filed a motion for detention for Scott Jamie Ashness
U.S. Attorney Nikolas Kerest filed a motion for detention for Scott Jamie Ashness, who allegedly scammed banks in Vermont, New York, and New Hampshire. Federal Judge Kevin J. Doyle approved the motion. Ashness, 43, of Stewart, Florida, who allegedly scammed three local Passumpsic Banks branches, by using a fake United States passport card with information about the alleged victim and a photograph of Ashness. He allegedly deposited fake checks and then asked the teller to withdraw cash from the alleged victim’s account. Ashness successfully obtained nearly $60,000 in cash during two days of criminal activity in Vermont. The U.S. Attorney filed a request to the judge saying Ashness is eligible for detention because the case involves a serious risk and that Ashness will flee the court.
