Vermont Lawmakers Frustrated by Delay in Work Zone Speed Camera Pilot
Vermont lawmakers are questioning the slow rollout of a pilot project to install speed cameras in work zones. The law approved last year was prompted, in part, after a construction flagger was struck and killed on the job. The pilot project set to happen this summer would have installed traffic cameras in work zones in three locations, but VTrans confirms it’s on pause because of a shortage of law enforcement. Lawmakers say the project needs to go forward to see if the cameras will change driver behavior. “Unfortunately, with the delay, you’ll see it when we open construction of next year. The committee is pretty frustrated that we did not move forward quicker this year,” said Rep. Matt Walker of Swanton. VTrans says it will present recommendations to the Legislature next year.
