A Newport man who two years ago was arrested for armed robbery

A Newport man who two years ago was arrested for armed robbery in the Northeast Kingdom was arrested on Monday in Littleton after police said he walked into a downtown store, demanded money, and told the victim behind the counter that he had a gun. Nathan Cheney, 26, is charged with one Class A felony count of robbery for the incident that occurred at Pentimento gift shop.

Additional charges are expected to be filed. No injuries were reported during the incident. Cheney was remanded him to the Grafton County House of Corrections.

“From the original call to when he was taken into custody was a matter of minutes,” said Littleton Police Detective Sgt. Scott Powers. Littleton police apprehended Cheney less than 10 minutes after the initial call from Bella Funk Boutique at 1:38 p.m. Powers said “We got the call from Bella Funk first, and as the officers were arriving on the call, we got the second call from Pentimento and immediately responded there.” While interviewing the owner, dispatch advised of another robbery attempt down the street at Pentimento.” After leaving the store the subject was still walking down the street. Monahan and Powers spotted the man walking near the Arrow Express automotive repair shop, where, they were able to catch up to him and he was taken into custody.”

In February 2022, he was arrested on a charge of robbing Jimmy Kwik’s Store in Newport and fleeing with $200 stolen from the cash register. In April Cheney was cited by Vermont State Police for possessing stolen property in Glover. In March 2022, Cheney was cited to appear in Orleans Superior Court on a felony charge of buying more than $1,000 of merchandise using a debit card that didn’t belong to him.
