DOJ Sues Vermont Over Climate Superfund Law Amid Growing Legal Challenges

Vermont faces another lawsuit over its climate superfund law. The U.S. Department of Justice on Thursday filed complaints against four states, including Vermont and New York. Vermont’s law seeks to hold the oil industry accountable for its role in climate change. The suit comes after the president directed the attorney general to take action against states with what they call unconstitutional laws that burden domestic energy production. Earlier this year, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the American Petroleum Institute also sued the state, arguing that the law is preempted by the federal Clean Air Act.
