Police say a vehicle pursuit that started in the village Wednesday night covered 23 miles and didn’t end until the fleeing vehicle crashed in a Glover field. Antonio Hammond, 39, of St. Johnsbury, drove a stolen vehicle operating on a spare tire at speeds up to 80 mph to elude police.  Cpl. Johnson said he had learned that a black 2005 Chevrolet Impala had been stolen from Jacob Olcott, who said the vehicle’s spare tire was mounted in the front. At about 7:40 p.m. on Wednesday, Cpl. Steven Hartwell reported that he found the vehicle and attempted to stop it. The driver was refusing to stop while driving north on Railroad Street.  The vehicle turned north onto Memorial Drive and continued on that road, “reaching speeds of over 80 mph. The pursuit didn’t stop until the driver lost control of it on Rt. 122 in Glover. The vehicle crashed in a field and came to rest on its side. The Jaws of Life were used by responding firefighters to gain access to Hammond. He was taken by ambulance to North Country Hospital for treatment. He scheduled for arraignment on today in Caledonia Superior Court.
