A man allegedly held multiple people at gunpoint on Third Street in Newport. David Perry, 41, of Winooski, pleaded not guilty in Orleans Superior Court on Thursday to three counts of felony charges of kidnapping, three counts of unlawful restraint, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and a misdemeanor charge of reckless endangerment. Judge Thibault held Perry without bail at Northern State Correctional Facility in Newport. On Wednesday, March 27, at about 9:09 p.m., Newport officers responded to a call for a disturbance at a home near 108 Third Street. Through an investigation, Newport Police learned that a man, later confirmed to be David Perry, held multiple people at gunpoint and had left the scene in a dark blue Dodge truck with several individuals. At about 10:43 p.m., Newport officers observed the truck on Lake Road and conducted a high-risk traffic stop. Perry was taken into custody without incident. Newport Police determined that Perry had held five people at gunpoint and made death threats, as well as placing the handgun against the temple and body of one person. The incident remains under active investigation by the Newport Police Department. Police Chief Bingham commended the officers for their professionalism in bringing a dangerous situation to a safe conclusion. A witness . She reported that she heard yelling and screaming on Third Street in Newport and stated when she went to see what was happening, she encountered a woman who had been involved in the incident. The alleged victim said that there was a male holding “four people at gunpoint.” The witness stated when she looked back out to Third Street, she could see people running “up and down Third Street screaming” and a male running up the road with a gun. Perry faces a possible sentence of life in prison.
